The weekend is approaching fast and I can't say for certain yet if there'll be a release this weekend. Rather than having you all sitting around waiting I've set up a mailing list for Server Status 2. I won't be using this as a full Rushland mailing list and most certainly I won't be using this for anything non-Server Status 2 so don't be worried about receiving irritating e-mails every few days - I hate them just as much as you. All that'll be sent out is a release announcement, possibly some post-release information (service packs etc) and that's it. You can subscribe by e-mailing (it doesn't matter what you put in the subject and body) status2-subscribe@rushland.net. You can unsubscribe at any time.

Not much news lately, school is seriously cutting into programming time :( Server Status 2 should be ready by the weekend with a 2.1 release following soon after - to add caching features. So far I'm quite happy with it - I spent today working on the admin side and while the admin side code isn't as nice as I'd hope - it certainly gets the job done.

For those who know and enjoy the Server Status Checker I wrote a few months back - I have some good news. Back by popular demand - I've written a new versions, under a new name "Services Status 2". The front end has been completed - check it out now here. Want to know what you can look forward to? How about this:
- Server "Groups" with different port tests (e.g. web servers, e-mail servers)
- Easy addition of new services, all you need is the port number
- New back-end interface for adding/removing services, controlling groups and adding/removing servers. No more hacking away at PHP files
- Template based system to make the design almost completely customisable
I hope to add more features to this before I release it and I love hearing feedback so if you have a comment/suggestion/criticism - please send it to me, just click contact me in the navigation bar.
Oh, the bad news (unrelated) is that my e-mail server is acting up so I'm not receiving anything thing at the moment - hopefully it's all sitting on the server waiting to be picked up and not in the "abyss" (or even, god forbid, /dev/null!)

The aforementioned e-mail server problem was corrected about an hour after this message was added.

Well, here it is, the "W3C version" of Rushland. I moved the navbar to the top simply because it's simpler to and I have other work to attend to. The good news is that this version is being launched on a brand new server. I've moved from hosting with DSVR to a new H-Sphere network with Relio. The server has been up a few hours and trust me, this thing flies - I've seen what it's kitted out with. Hopefully I'll get to take advantage of it with some new scripts :)
The downside however is that the site is unavailable at the moment and by the time you read this - will probably have been down a few hours. This is more than likely due to the fact I've modified the DNS record 3 times in the last 2 days causing the DNS servers to lose sync. I can't even work out for certain which DNS server is handling my own requests at the moment. Hopefully this will correct itself. Apologies for the downtime.
Those of you with Internet Explorer (any version up to and including 6) on the PC will notice that you cannot change the text size using "View -> Text Size" of your browser. The reason for this is that I had to use absolute values for font sizes to make the site compatible with Mozilla, Netscape and Opera. In all of these browsers (and IE6 Mac), the text size feature still works because these use a much better algorithm. I hope Microsoft will update theirs to accomodate absolute values. I sincerely apologise for the problems this may cause.

It's taken a month, two designs and countless hours but I think I'm beginning to make headway on this new W3C "idea" of mine. So far it's going pretty well. I was aiming to create a side navigation bar but technical limitations of browsers (mainly that they haven't standardised) have made it almost impossible to make a design I'm comfortable with.

Back from holidays and my desire to turn this whole place into a tribute to CSS hasn't faded yet. So far I've only really gotten this page done but I'm ploughing along. OneStopTutorials has definitely been shelved. I don't see it being revisited 'til next summer at the earliest. Pity really.
I suppose I have no other news really so if you all sit tight, I'll get back to work.

The sun can do funny things to a guy's head (I'm away in Portugal at the moment) and thus, I find myself wanting to redesign the whole website to make extensive use of CSS (cascading style sheets), maybe someday I'll get around to putting to disk an essay on why. I'll keep you all up to date on progress.
OneStopTutorials.com (as mentioned in previous news message) has been put on hold indefinitely due to a loss in sponsorship and lack of spare time. I'm not sure if it'll even be completed this year (back to school in September, final exams next June!)
VGarage is still "in the air", there's been no work on it in months though so I'm hoping somebody will breath new life into it.

Well, finally got around to updating the portfolio including my recently completed MilkMyCow.com work. I also plan to have Money Matters finished soon so I aim to have that up.
In project news, I think VGarage has found a new home - no details yet, it's all "in the air" at the moment. I've gotten off to a great start on my new project - OneStopTutorials.com, most of the people I've talked to about have said they like it and the response from tutorial websites has been phenomenal. I hope to have a project page for that up very soon.
